Can You Mix Greens Powder With Yogurt?

If you’re a yogurt fan, what could be better than a nutrient-dense, superfood yogurt?

If you need to boost your nutrient intake but you don’t have time to get the blender out, try adding a generous scoop of a high-quality greens powder such as AG1 or Vital Greens with your yogurt.

If you want to make the healthiest choice possible, opt for a full-fat yogurt that is pot fermented - the low-fat varieties are typically loaded with sugar.

If you really want to give your gut some extra TLC, we’d recommend choosing a probiotic-rich yogurt. These also tend to be high in protein, so you’ll stay feeling fuller for longer.

However, yogurt and greens powder may not be the tastiest of combinations for some of us - so go the extra step and add a handful of fresh fruit.

This could be anything from strawberries & blueberries to chopped bananas & pomegranates. A drizzle of honey to top things off is a great option too.

Furthermore, if you’re feeling creative why not try making your own yogurt?

Making yogurt from scratch is fun, quick and gives you the creative freedom to make any type of yogurt you desire.

Homemade Yogurt

*For this recipe, we’ll be using cow's milk. An alternative vegan yogurt recipe can be found below.

Ingredients

  • 500ml of milk
  • 2 tbsp of live, natural yogurt

Method

  1. Pour 500ml of milk into a saucepan and heat it to 85 degrees Celsius. To prevent your milk from catching, place it inside another saucepan filled halfway up with water, and heat it up.
  2. Once the milk is heated, place your saucepan into an ice bath and cool your milk down to a temperature of 43 degrees Celsius.
  3. Now, blend in your starter yogurt, which should be at room temperature.
  4. Once you’ve blended in your starter yogurt, transfer this to a container and leave it in a warm place for around seven hours (your warm place should be at least 38 degrees Celsius).
  5. Stir your yogurt, transfer it into an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for around a week.

Once your yogurt is ready to eat, get yourself a portion and add in a scoop of greens powder, a mixture of fresh fruit, and honey (optional).

Homemade Vegan Yogurt

Want a smooth, tangy, and creamy vegan yogurt to eat with your greens powder? Check out the recipe below.

Ingredients

  • Non-dairy milk (coconut milk or cashew milk will produce thicker yogurt)
  • Thickener (tapioca starch or agar are both great)
  • Probiotics
  • Sugar or sweetener

Method

  1. Pour your non-dairy milk (1 ž cups) into a saucepan.
  2. Add around two tablespoons of thickener to your milk. If you’re using tapioca starch, mix it with around half a cup of milk before adding it to your milk. If you’re using agar, add two tablespoons directly to the milk, and leave it to settle for around 5 minutes.
  3. Now, you can start heating your milk. Heat your milk to around 80 degrees Celcius and stir constantly. Then, start to reduce the heat and let it cook slowly. Stir it occasionally until your thickener has dissolved - this will usually take around 5 minutes.
  4. Now, to let your healthy probiotics thrive, cool your milk. Remove it from the saucepan and occasionally stir until it reaches 110 degrees Fahrenheit. If you want to speed up the process, put your saucepan in an ice bath.
  5. Add around four probiotic capsules to your milk. Sprinkle these over, or use 1 teaspoon of probiotic powder.
  6. If you want, you can now add sugar to the mix.
  7. Transfer the yogurt to glass containers and leave it in a warm place (43 degrees Celcius) until it’s reached the desired consistency.

Can You Add Greens Powder To Coffee?

can you add greens powder to coffee?

I mean, you can (you’re an adult after all), but I wouldn’t If I were you.

I love coffee and I love a good greens powder - but I don’t think they go well in the same cup.

Some supplements like Chaga mix really well with coffee and complement the flavour, while others, such as greens powder completely ruin the taste of your morning cuppa.

In my opinion, you are much better off mixing your greens powder with something sweet like a juice, smoothie or bircher muesli as it’s a much better combination of flavours.

How Can I Make Greens Powder Taste Better?

Greens powders boast an incredible array of health benefits, but let’s be honest, the taste isn’t for everyone.

Fortunately, greens powders are very versatile and there are a lot of great ways to get them into your diet.

We’ve listed a few examples below to get you started:

  • Mix it with any kind of fruit juice (orange, apple, etc.)
  • Bake or cook your powder into a cake or muffins
  • Mix into savoury dips such as hummus or guacamole (if it’s an unsweetened powder)
  • Blend into smoothies, smoothie bowls and breakfast bowls
  • Add to fruit salads

Citrus flavours are often the most effective at disguising the taste of greens powder so, try adding your green powder into a recipe that’ll benefit from a squeeze of lemon juice or fresh fruit.

Can You Mix Greens Powder With Pre-Workout?

Off to the gym? Chuck some greens powder in with your pre-workout out for an added energy boost and a strong dose of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to get you through.

There’s no evidence to suggest that greens powder can’t be added to your pre-workout, so you can treat yourself to a generous helping of vitamins and nutrients before you hit the treadmill.

Your body will thank you for the extra nutrients, too. Greens powder typically contains plenty of vitamins and nutrients, including:

  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Potassium
  • Folate
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin K

…and more.

Iron helps build our red blood cells and carries oxygen to the muscles. This helps us metabolize protein and fats for muscle building and repair, and also may help reduce aches and pains - speeding up recovery time.

Let’s not forget those all-important Vitamins A and D, either. Vitamin A supports protein synthesis, which is crucial for muscle growth.

Vitamin D is also essential for muscles, and research is beginning to indicate it may have an effect on helping improve muscle strength and postural stability.

So not only can you mix greens powder with your pre-workout, you probably should!

The Bottom Line

Greens powder is a powerful nutritional supplement, and you don’t have to avoid it for fear of its flavour.

Many greens powders actually taste quite good - but for those that don’t, it’s easy to get creative in the kitchen and add them into your yogurt, fruit juice, or pre-workout to make your daily dose of the green powder much more palatable.
